How do I choose between a “male” and “female” mold?

Choosing between a male and female thermoforming mold depends on the shape of the part, which side needs the best surface detail, the depth of the draw, material behavior, and how the finished part will be used.

A male mold is typically raised, with the heated plastic formed over the outside of the tool. This approach can be a good fit for parts where the inside dimensions are less critical or where the outer shape can be formed efficiently over the mold.

A female mold is recessed, with the plastic drawn into the cavity. This can be useful when the outside surface, outside dimensions, or exterior appearance of the finished part is especially important.

There is not one “better” option for every project. The right choice depends on the part design, tolerances, wall thickness, material selection, appearance requirements, and production goals. In some cases, mold design may also need to account for trimming, routing, assembly, packaging, or other secondary operations.
